Lesson 9 - 27/03/17

This week, we made a maze book and we had to draw different parts of the Hive, as well as the people inside it. I was drawing parts of the Hive that I thought was interesting as opposed to what I thought wasn't interesting. The reason for this is that drawing something that I found uninteresting, the end result wouldn't be that good. I did a lot of small speed drawings and large scale drawings to have a variety of sizes in the book. I did one large double page spread in the center of the book, which was fairly difficult due to the angle but I was so keen to do this particular part of the Hive. I think that the end result was very good. I do think that I needed to add more wet media next time but it was hard to paint in a library during the lesson since I didn't have the water.

Lesson 8 - Barcelona (20-24)

This week, I was away in Barcelona on an Illustration Trip. As I missed the location drawing this week, rather than going out and drawing buildings and people in Worcester, I have now decided to use the drawings I did in Barcelona as a replacement.

We walked all around to try and find interesting buildings to sketch but the most interesting building was the Gaudi Cathedral due to its beautiful spirals on the outside and the colours on the inside. I looked at the shapes of buildings, the colours and also the graffiti on the sides of the buildings. It was a wonderful sight to see with all the fantastic architecture. I did a variety of drawings; mainly with pen and pencils due to the fact that we had a lot of places to go to so we didn't have much time to sit down and draw. However, I am pleased with some of the drawings I did, although some are better than others.

Lesson 7 - 13/03/17

This week was one of the best drawing session for me due to the successful outcomes of my drawings. Aside from the warm-ups, I made the error of not making my first drawing big enough. I do like how they are layered on top of one another as it looks very surreal. Perhaps charcoal would have been a better material to use next time. I am extremely proud of my green painted drawing as I have improved massively when it comes to size. I think that this is my biggest drawing of the semester. The hair is my favourite part due to the roughness of the brush stroke and the light/dark types of green. However, it is very flat against the page so maybe I shouldn't have coloured in the drawing but rather use patchwork strokes. This is what I did in my second painting drawing, in which I used purple patchwork strokes. However, my problem with the drawing this time was the pose and size. It was a fairly decent size but it looked slightly messy in some paces. In conclusion to this week, I am pleased with my progression as I am clearly improving!

Lesson 6 - 07/03/17 (Homework)

For this week's work, it was more observational drawings but this time, we had to draw the model while she was moving. I found this hard but I did get used to it. We had to do the same for homework this week; two being primary and the other two being secondary, eg YouTube. I think that that hardest one was the secondary reference due to the fact that I wasn't in control of the movement at all. It was good to practice though and I chose specific ones where the limbs were at odd positions, hence the axel and death-drop. The primary ones were eaiser as I could choose what the movements were and again, I wanted to try something that made the joints bend and such. It's almost similar to what the model did in the lecture.
